Can Opener Day is celebrated by the people of America.
Although it is difficult to find out who exactly started the day, the original can opener was invented in 1858.

When canned food was invented, a can opener became a very important tool as the lids were supposed to be cut off, which was seen as a hassle by people. To get rid of that, Warner invented a tool to easily open cans.

You can cut off the lid to open it without a can opener but this is difficult and can be dangerous, as you can easily cut yourself.
It is advisable to open a tin with a can opener, then use a spoon to lever the lid off, so you don't cut yourself. However, some people say that, if you rub the lid of a tin can for long enough with a warm metal spoon, it will eventually wear through the lid.
You can open a can of tuna by using a sharp knife but this is not advised!
