National Author's Day is celebrated throughout the United States of America.
Since this day pays tribute to all American authors and their contributions to literature, this day is celebrated by every avid reader and people who want a temporary retreat from the boredom of monotonous life.
The idea of having a special day dedicated to American writers dates back to 1928 when the Generation Federation Of Women's Clubs started the practice. This idea was endorsed nationally about forty years later in 1949 with the approval of the United States Department Of Commerce.
The foundation of this day is credited to Nellie Verne Burt McPherson. Nellie was a teacher by profession and she devoted all her life to reading literature. The idea struck her when she was hospitalized at the time of World War I. Intrigued by the reading of her favorite book 'Eben Holden's Last Day A-Fishing' by Irving Bacheller, she composed a letter to the writer clearly expressing her admiration of the work. As a reply to her letter, Bacheller sent her an autographed copy of another book. This inspired her to come up with a way to pay tribute to all writers of America.
There's more than one reason to celebrate this auspicious event and history bears the evidence. Let's take a look!
Americans celebrate this day with a lot of enthusiasm. The primary motto of observing the day is to motivate young writers to pursue writing until they can produce their magnum opus. To ensure this, one must support and nurture writing skills of a young writer not only on this special occasion but throughout the year. People spend time at libraries or just sit back at home and pen down some of their personalized lines. This day doesn't only aim to celebrate your favorite author but pays tribute to all who aspire to write.
The best way to honor authors is to read and appreciate their published writings. So, you can root for one of those all-time favorite novels or any of those American classics. You can gift yourself some new books and discover these budding writers to encourage them. However, choosing from among a plethora of options can become challenging. In this case, you can just spend the evening in your local library with the librarian as your guide. If you've had a tiring week at work and are reluctant to visit the library or even read a book, then you can always huddle up under the warm blanket with a cup of hot beverage and enjoy a movie adaptation of one of your favorite books. For instance, you can choose from F. Scott Fitzgerald's 'The Great Gatsby,' 'The 'Green Mile' by Stephen King, 'To Kill a Mocking Bird' by Harper Lee, or Margaret Mitchell's 'Gone With the Wind.' This day is perfect for trying your hand at writing. You can begin by writing a short story and gradually level up your skills for a start. You can even take part in National Novel Writing Month!
The practice of reading books habitually is extremely beneficial and National Author's Day is the perfect day to initiate this healthy ritual, especially among kids.
Officially, there is no separate National Writer's Day. Appreciation and heaps of admiration are endowed on writers on National Author's Day itself.
Government promotes this day by organizing several events to encourage younger generations to write.
Since this day is all about felicitating authors, writers feel encouraged and motivated due to all the appreciation that is heaped upon them. This day is a healthy practice to keep this writing tradition alive.
