Confucius Day was officially started in 2006 in Hong Kong.
Hong Kong officially announced National Confucius Day in October 2006.
National Confucius Day is celebrated in the third week of September to honor the great scholar and Chinese teacher, philosopher Confucius. National Confucius Day is observed as Teacher's Day in China and Taiwan. Confucius emphasized education to all without racial discrimination. His philosophies had no influence on the Chinese culture at the time of his death, but in later years the Chinese Government started to follow his teachings as the official philosophy.
Many countries with Confucian cultures such as China, Taiwan, South Korea, Macau, and Hong Kong hold commemorations. The grand ceremony dedicated to Confucius begins early in the morning on the island of Qufu in the Chinese province of Shandong and the Confucius Temple in Taipei, Taiwan. The ceremony is attended by scholars from various countries, notable people from different parts of the world, and descendants of Confucius. At the Confucius Temple in Qufu, musical performances and dancing using ancient instruments, wearing traditional costumes, performing early rituals and rites, and various other activities and events are held. The ceremonial music, called the 'The Sound of Peace,' is played with traditional Chinese instruments. On this day, not only is Confucius' life celebrated but his death is also revered.
You could use this opportunity to contemplate the virtues of Confucius, as the significance of honesty, mutual respect, sincerity, self-control and moderation, dutifulness, self-discipline, wisdom, and courage. You may apply these concepts in your life and become a better person.
You can celebrate this day by learning more about this ancient philosopher's life and teachings. You can read 'The Analects', which gives us information about Confucius through the memories of his earliest disciples.
Another way to celebrate Confucius's birthday is to learn about Confucius's philosophies on food and apply them. Some of these food philosophies include: chopping food into small bits and serving them, consuming properly cooked, fresh meals only, and eating meals in moderation.
