In 1938, the Salvation Army held the inaugural National Doughnut Day in Chicago to honor World War I donut lassies. During the Economic Crisis, they started the event to collect money and promote awareness for the Army's social welfare activities. Donut lassies fried donuts in American Soldiers' helmets.
