With cases starting from the United States of America on May 25th, this day falls on the same day as International Missing Children’s Day.
This day honors missing children, the ones whom we have lost. Events are held annually to raise awareness about child abduction, ways of keeping your children safe, and providing support to victims’ families.
National Missing Children’s Day has been believed to be an observance day since 1983.
Initiated by Ronald Reagan, it was designated to highlight the problem of child abduction and the need for protecting children through proper law enforcement.
Etan Patz's case received extensive coverage despite the fact that cases of children missing were rarely reported on or gained attention. Black-and-white pictures of him were distributed by his father, who happened to be a professional photographer, in his efforts to find him.
In memory of Etan Patz, who disappeared in the streets of New York City when he was just a six-year-old on May 25th, 1979, every year, the Department of Justice commemorates this day by holding a ceremony. This is done to honor the efforts of different agencies and organizations that have put forward the concern for protection of the children of our nation.
This commemoration serves as a ceremony to honor and appreciate the ones dedicated to this purpose, and to reunite those children with their families who are missing. It also serves to remind all the individuals who are concerned for missing children that child safety must be the foremost priority.
One way in which the observance of this day is followed is by looking for ways to reunite a missing child with his/her family. We can also pay our respects to the ones dedicated to this cause by volunteering in our communities, and brainstorming ways to help find and bring these children home, as well as to provide support to parents and families of missing children. Attending law enforcement ceremonies is also a good option.
National Missing Children's Day was first brought up by President Ronald Reagan.
International Missing Children's Day (IMCD) is observed annually on May 25 to raise awareness about child abduction issues, and to educate the parents and the guardians responsible for any children about the measures they can take to protect them.
Issues of the children missing and exploited are focused on and highlighted, which, as a result, encourages people to dig deeper into the issue and understand its significance.
There are no limitations to observing this day.
The significance of this day is to understand the importance of saving children, and reuniting missing children with their families. While parents and guardians need to be concerned, children on the other hand, also understand the ways in how they can prevent these kinds of situations.
