Purple Up Day is a day celebrated in the United States of America.
Purple Up Day is celebrated by all the military forces of the USA.
This day to acknowledge military children first began in 2011, although it had been celebrated during April since 1986.
It was initiated by Secretary of Defense Casper Weinberger, who established the Month of the Military Child to honor military families and their children, in April 1986. The University of New Hampshire Co-Operative Extension Military Youth and Family program initiated April 15, 2011, as Purple Up Day because it fell in April, the Month of the Military Child.
The US military believes that military families are the lifeline between enlisted members and military service.
Keeping that in mind, defense secretary Casper Weinberger established April as the month of military youth. Later, in 2011, the University of New Hampshire Co-Operative Extension Military Youth and Family program selected April 15 during the Month of the Military Child as a way to honor military children from all branches of the military. They called it Purple Up Day because purple represents the colors of each branch of the military as one. Since then, other organizations and communities spread the word, giving the celebration momentum.
The typical tradition of this day is to wear purple to exhibit your support for the military child and military family of all branches, such as the Coast Guard, Navy, and Air Force. Military facilities and schools also host special events recognizing the sacrifices of the military parent and military children. Organizations, school districts, and local businesses celebrate April, specifically when the 15th is around the weekend.
Programs such as resiliency lessons, military reflection lessons, art contests, virtual meets, and social media are all used to share stories and to celebrate the children of military families. Saluting military children at sporting events, flag hoisting by military kids while singing the National Anthem, and military galas are all ways to observe this particular day.
The color purple on this day symbolizes all military branches, as it is a mix of Army green, Coast Guard, Air Force, and Navy blue, and Marines red.
Apparently, though observed for military kids and families, Purple Up is not a national holiday.
The entire military month of April is sponsored by the family policy and the defense community departments. This month is celebrated in a variety of ways.
The month of April is the Month of the Military Child.
A military child or military youth is a young person whose family serves in the military.
