World Day For Audiovisual Heritage is not a public holiday but a global observance to be recognized anywhere in the world.
The day is celebrated by the National Archives in many countries, in order to create awareness about the importance of audiovisual images.
The day was first celebrated in 2007 during the 21st General Conference to preserve moving images. During the conference, the idea of the day was proposed, and it highlights the role of building awareness about the audiovisual heritage in people's minds.
The World Day For Audiovisual Heritage (WDAH) was approved by the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) with the Coordinating Council of Audiovisual Archives Associations (CCAAA) on October 27, 2005.
Now that we have learned about the day let's learn about the history of audiovisuals in the USA.
United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) hosts various events for the WDAH celebration every year as a tradition and awareness campaign. The objectives include raising awareness about the importance of audiovisual heritage and the preservation of the stories.
Every year on October 27, if you have old tapes, sound recordings, cassettes, or old home movies laying around, WDAH is a great time to digitize all your documents and safeguard that documentary heritage under public consciousness for the future generation.
On this day, preserve your memories for years to come and to your future generations, and spread awareness about the audiovisual documents by sharing #AudiovisualHeritage on social media.
There are no celebrations better than learning the heritage of audiovisual material on the World Day For Audiovisual Heritage. So go to your local library or audiovisual societies and check out some audiovisual material on this day.
United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) with CCAAA conducts competitions like logo contests or discussion panels to promote the World Day For Audiovisual Heritage. In addition, participate in the programs conducted by UNESCO or local programs organized by the national film archives, radio stations, or governments.
If no activities are happening around you, volunteer to organize one by reaching out to your local library or museum. And get your family and friends to help you with the event. You can also organize a general awareness event under the theme of preservation of historical importance.
World Day For Audiovisual Heritage offers a chance to raise awareness about the shared audiovisual heritage and the importance of preservation and archiving of audiovisual content.
World Day For Audiovisual Heritage, approved by United Nations Educational, Scientific, and Cultural Organization (UNESCO), seeks to raise awareness about the importance and preservation of audiovisual material for future generations.
