Professor Jonah Ratsimbazafy is credited with founding this day back in the year 2014. His motive was to create awareness of the extinction threat facing lemurs in Madagascar. He believed that the local Malagasy people could benefit greatly from the conservation of lemurs. Here are some important events that are related to the history of World Lemur Day.
The World Lemur Festival is an annual event organized in Madagascar for lemur conservation. Different events are organized across Madagascar in partnership with the Lemur Conservation Network at zoos to encourage the conservation of these mammals. Local residents of Madagascar participate in events like face painting, dancing, and other cultural activities to raise awareness of lemur conservation.
