Go go go Joseph! I’m still humming the songs all around the house after having gone to see the latest production of Joseph and The Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat at the London Palladium. Starring Sheridan Smith as the narrator and Jason Donovan as the hip-swinging Pharaoh, this was a show in a million!
After presenting our Kidadl booking confirmation, we made our way to our seats giddy with excitement. There are booster seats available to borrow at the theatre so everyone had a good view. Shortly, the house lights began to dim and members of the orchestra sounded their instruments, trilling up and down musical scales - it was magical. Goosebumps soon appeared on my arms as the Aztec sounds of the iconic Joseph prologue written by Tim Rice and Andrew Lloyd Webber began to play. My face was lit up by the bright colours of the extraordinary set and dazzling costumes. This was the Joseph I remember from my childhood. Or was it?
I’m sure everyone is familiar with the basic premise of Joseph but for those who aren’t: Joseph is gifted an incredible coat of colours and his 11 brothers are jealous of him so seek revenge by selling him into slavery (cruel - I know!). But it is this slavery that makes him realise his incredible ability to interpret dreams - the rest is history! I don’t want to give away any spoilers but in this newly adapted production of Joseph things are turned on their head just slightly, including the clever use of children playing several adult roles. An interesting take on the original for sure. Not to mention the stellar performances by Jason Donovan and Sheridan Smith that blew me away.
I grinned from start to finish, but the finale was just out of this world. The entire auditorium leapt to their feet as we were invited to get up and join in with the encore. Singing our hearts out and showing off our best dance moves - we really felt as though we were part of the spectacle. And to top it all off, confetti rained down on us throughout the final song.
Whether you’re young or old, familiar with the story or not, Joseph is the high-energy, hilarious, fast-paced musical you need in your life right now. I’d recommend it to anyone over the age of four, out-of-towners, Londoners, thespians and those looking for a night of colour and laughter. The evening show finishes by 9:30pm which is workable if you’re taking little ones. All I can say is go, go go before it sells out!
Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat runs from Thursday 27th June to Sunday 8th September 2019. Tickets start from £23.
