This musical is the story of a young music fan called Jimmy Rabbitte. Jimmy converts a group of friends, who are also amateur musicians, into the best soul band the city of Dublin has ever created. The local music expert, Jimmy, puts an advertisement in a music paper and auditions a lot of musicians before finalising the group for his band called The Commitments. The members of the band come to know about each other along with their instruments. They rehearse and practice for their first show, but as they are getting better, the group combusts.
There are backing singers, but they are more focused on the middle-aged horn legend. The saxophone player has leaned toward a jazz career, while the singer has gone to Eurovision.
