  • Discover how the humble cocoa bean becomes the finest chocolate at York’s delightful chocolate factory.
  • Learn the secrets of chocolate masters Terry’s and Rowntree’s from their Yorkshire home base.
  • Become a chocolatier yourself and have a go at creating your very own sweet treats which you’ll get to take home at the end of the day - if they make it that far!

York’s Chocolate Story takes you back through the fascinating and mouthwatering history of chocolate, before letting you create and sample some of the good stuff yourselves. From its rainforest roots in Central America to the shelves and tummies of the nation, you’ll learn all about how the simple cocoa bean is transformed, hearing from an expert guide in the chocolate museum’s Story Zone and virtual chocolate factory.

Your chocolate experience will continue as you discover York’s most famous brands right on their home turf, where iconic names such as Terry’s and Rowntree, which is now owned by Nestlé, have been making their chocolate creations since the late nineteenth century. Take a trip down memory lane with retro chocolate favourites, and see the development of the KitKat, Terry’s Chocolate Orange and Yorkie bar (two guesses where they got their name!) plus many more sweet shop staples. Then for the best part - you’ll meet a master chocolatier and try your hand at the trade yourself, whipping up your very own batch of delicious cocoa treats. To round off a truly scrumptious day, you can sample freshly made chocolates by their hands and yours at one of the most famous York tourist attractions, which has been named as one of the best things to do in York with kids.
