ArcelorMittal Orbit

The ArcelorMittal Orbit is a sculpture like no other in Stratford Olympic Park, originally built as a landmark of the 2012 London Olympics and now enduring as one of East London’s most striking and visited features.
 

Created by the world-renowned sculptor Sir Anish Kapoor and engineer Cecil Balmond, the ArcelorMittal Orbit was made using 35,000 bolts and enough recycled steel (from old washing machines and used cars) to build 265 double-decker buses! Standing at an impressive 114 metres tall, it is the tallest sculpture in the whole of the UK and offers a twenty-mile view over the capital city. Following the success of the 2012 Olympics, the Orbit reopened in 2014 with Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park’s launch as a new urban space in East London, and in 2016 one of the UK’s most adventurous slides was incorporated into the design in a project between Carsten Höller and Anish Kapoor. 
 

So much more than a sculpture, the ArcelorMittal Orbit now features interior lifts and breathtaking viewing platforms as well as the famous 178 metre-long slide. With twelve thrilling twists and turns and a daring corkscrew to overcome, the slide at the ArcelorMittal Orbit is the world’s longest tunnel slide and attracts adrenaline junkies from far and wide. Propelling through darkness and then into transparent sections of the tunnel, you’ll see London’s skyline whiz past as you try to keep your head on this hair-raising experience like no other!

If you fancy a more leisurely visit or need to take a breather after your heart-pumping Olympic Park slide ride, the ArcelorMittal Orbit also offers stunning viewing opportunities across the capital city. Marvel at its own orbital structure and then venture up the ArcelorMittal’s interior lifts to gain extraordinary views of the Olympic Village and up to twenty miles beyond it on the Orbit's 80 metre-high platforms. You can also choose to take the stairs through the sculpture, featuring an incredible soundscape and mesmerising concave mirrors. Afterwards, explore the delights of the rest of Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park with charming canals, unique walkways and one of the best adventure playgrounds in the city, the Tumbling Bay Playground, complete with play fountains for those hot summer days. 
 

As well as the ArcelorMittal Orbit slide and viewpoints, there are plenty of other things to do in Stratford, London, for thrill-seeking families. Venture across the Emirates Air Line cable car or take on a climb at Up at The O2 just along the river.
 

What to know before you go

• Please note that you must be at least 8 years old and over 1.3m tall to ride The Slide. We recommend checking that your child reaches that height before booking tickets, otherwise they will not be allowed to ride even if they are over 8 years old.
• If you want to visit ArcelorMittal Orbit but aren't bothered about riding The Slide, you can get a cheaper ticket that just includes entry to the sculpture and its viewpoints.
• The ArcelorMittal Orbit is dedicated to making their attraction as accessible as possible. Wheelchairs are offered on a first-come, first-served basis and step-free access is available throughout the attraction. Audio Descriptive features are in place and Visitor Experience Hosts are on hand to provide support for visually or hearing impaired visitors. Assistance dogs are welcome on site.
• If you require assistance for The Slide then you are encouraged to contact the venue directly so that they can make suitable arrangements.
• Toilets and disabled toilets are located on the Lower Platform and have step-free access.
• The ArcelorMittal Orbit’s adjacent café, The Last Drop, is open daily serving snacks, light meals and hot and cold drinks or you can head to the north of the Olympic Park to the Timber Lodge Café, a solar-panelled cafe next to the Tumbling Bay Playground.
• Alternatively you can take a short stroll along the water to Here East, Hackney Wick’s canalside hub featuring a handful of cafes and restaurants, or head across the park to Westfield Stratford where you’ll find plenty of family-friendly outlets.
   

Getting there

• The ArcelorMittal Orbit is located in Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park, Stratford, between the London Aquatics Centre and the London Stadium.
• There is no visitor car park, but nearby you can pay to park at Stratford multi-storey car park or Westfield Stratford City car park, where you can register online for whole-day tickets. There is also some free street parking nearby in Hackney Wick.
• The Orbit is a ten-minute walk from Stratford station, which services the Central and Jubilee lines as well as National Rail trains and the Overground. You can also take the Overground to Hackney Wick nearby.
• Buses D8, 339, 308 and 388 run through and around the park.
