This huge theme park has 10 themed lands and more than 40 rides, so it's appropriate for all different ages. Chessington rides are world-class - why not head to the Forbidden Kingdom for a terrifying spin and soak on Rameses Revenge or to the Wild Woods for the family friendly Gruffalo River Ride Adventure. Younger kids will love the Flying Jumbos in Zufari land and the Scorpion Express in Mexicana land.

Don’t forget, there are tree-top high wire adventures, a soft play, log flume and safari as well - plus the separate zoo and Sea Life Centre. With live shows, thrills and spills, this theme park will have everyone grinning from ear to ear. Whether you have a Merlin annual pass or are treating yourselves for a one-day visit, your family won’t be disappointed.

There are different shows and activities running each day, including animal feeds and talks, a sea lion show, a Gruffalo grove show and talks and demonstrations in the Sea Life Centre.

Kidadler Sadia recommends in particular the Scorpion Express rollercoaster and the Gruffalo River Ride Adventure which "we went on twice!"

What to know before you go

  • We recommend planning your day out in the morning so you can catch the shows you want to see. Ask at the entrance for a list of what’s on. It’s also worthwhile planning your route through the park so you don’t waste time doubling back.
  • Height restrictions apply on most rides, so check on the website for younger kids.
  • If you are worried about keeping track of your kids as they run off with glee, pick up wristbands from Guest Help and Info where you can write your mobile number in case you get separated.
  • You can see an indication of ride status and queue times by downloading the official Chessington mobile app.
  • Baby-changing facilities can be found by the toilets at Lodge Gate. There are also microwaves available across the park to heat up baby food. The baby feeding room is located by the Forbidden Kingdom toilets.
  • Rides and attractions are subject to availability and may close for technical or operational reasons, capacity, weather, special events or to ensure the safety and security of adventurers or if Merlin considers it is reasonable to do so.
  • During off-peak weekdays, Rattlesnake and Griffin's Galleon may not be operational.
  • If you’re pregnant, please pay attention to the signage at individual rides before deciding to board and consider your own health and medical advice before partaking in any rides and attractions.
  • The park has lots of on-site restaurants including the including Fried Chicken Co. (Forbidden Kingdom) and Adventure Point Pizza Pasta (Adventure Point), an all-you-can-eat buffet and a shop where you can buy jars of baby food, but picnics are allowed and there are large open areas where you can lay your spread out. Don’t miss Nitrogenie in Wild Asia land where they make ice cream using liquid nitrogen. Kidadler Louise recommends taking a packed lunch, as she says the "food outlets are expensive and [have] big queues in the holidays."

Getting there

  • The nearest train station is Chessington South, which can be reached by trains from Waterloo, Clapham Junction and Wimbledon. It is a 10-minute walk to the park along an A road.
  • By bus you can take the 465 from Kingston, or the 467 from Epsom.
  • If you drive, the theme park is on the A23, about 2 miles off both the A3 and M25 (junction 9 or 10).
