While East Yorkshire might not be known for its beaches, you would be missing out if you didn't plan a trip to Fraisthorpe beach on your next Yorkshire trip. Making up part of the huge Bridlington Bay, Fraisthorpe beach is a hidden gem that everyone in the family is bound to love. The flat, sandy beaches are perfect for sunbathing on a summer's day or enjoying a blustery walk in the rain. You'll also be able to spot some low clay cliffs as you wander along the beach, as well as some great open views across the North Sea.
Fraisthorpe beach is one kilometre in length and is the perfect place for kids of all ages to enjoy. With many rock pools hidden around, there is lots of exploring to do, and armed with a bucket and space kids will be able to entertain themselves all day long. This is also a top spot for crabbing, so kids can keep their eyes peeled to see some snappy friends. And, if you've been looking for dog-friendly beaches in Yorkshire, you can't beat Fraisthorpe beach. The huge expanse of sand means that dogs (and kids!) can run around to their heart's content. The open space also makes Fraisthorpe beach a popular destination for kitesurfing, windsurfing and horse riding, so if you have sports lovers in the family, this could be the beach for them. Swimming is also allowed here, so for those not afraid of a refreshing dip, feel free to head into the sea, or have a paddle.
If you fancy something to eat on your day out, head to The Cow Shed café, located just next to the beach at Auburn Farm. Like all the surrounding areas, The Cow Shed is dog-friendly and boasts some fantastic sea views. Here you can enjoy some homemade coffee and cake, or a cooked breakfast if you're around in the morning. Or, with so much space on Fraisthorpe beach, you could always bring your own food and settle down for a picnic, weather permitting of course. Alternatively, head to the nearby town of Bridlington, less than a 20 minute drive away, where there are plenty of places to enjoy lunch with a view of Bridlington beach. Said by some to be the 'lobster capital of Europe', it is definitely recommended that you try some of Bridlington's famous shellfish on your visit. Bridlington is also known for its Land Trains, short train rides that take you along the Bridlington coast. Ever popular with families with kids, this is a great activity to try on your day out at Fraisthorpe beach.
If you are planning on staying in this charming area of Yorkshire, there are plenty of Fraisthorpe camping spots nearby, including Wold Farm Campsite and Jackson R T & Sons in Bridlington, and Mill Farm Country Park in Driffield. There are also lots of options for hotels and self-catering accommodation in the surrounding area.
If your family have enjoyed their day at Fraisthorpe Beach and are keen for more Yorkshire days out, why not head over to the nearby Bridlington Birds of Prey and Animal Park, to see a bird show and meet the animals? Or, to check out some fascinating museum exhibits and explore a secret garden, make sure to add Burnby Hall Gardens and Museum to your list of places to visit next.
