Blencogo Farm, also known as Blencogo Farm Alpacas, is a farm in Wigton, Cumbria, most famous for its alpaca experience. If you're looking for things to do in Cumbria and amazing family days out in Cumbria, like Wordsworth House and Walby Farm Park, you'll love Blencogo Farm.

Blencogo in Wigton is a small farming village. It is on the Solway Plain, a coastal plain going all the way to Scotland.

It is most famous for growing osier willow for basket-making and related crafts. It was first found in literature in 1100 CE, so it's truly a little piece of history hidden in the countryside for you to see.

The closest town is Wigton, a market town in the centre of Solway Plain. It's also an ancient settlement and began with a Roman Cavalry Station.

It's only a 50-minute drive from Hadrian's Wall, and also still holds regular livestock auctions that you might be able to visit. The town was also mentioned in one of Charles Dickens' books, so if you enjoy "The Two Idle Apprentices" you might recognise the spot of this fantastic town.

Blencogo Farm has ten alpacas; there are six girls called Party Girl, Newsflash, Lucky Star, Fizztime, Twinkle and Flick, and four boys called Dude, Barnaby, Little Boy Blue, and the newest addition from June 2020, As Good As Gold. A visit to Cumbria isn't complete without a day with the alpacas.

The farm is most well known for its alpaca experience, allowing you to see, feed and visit the alpacas who live on the farm.

You'll get close to the herd as a whole, touching their soft fleece and feeding them as well as taking them for a walk throughout the local area. You'll get photos taken with the alpacas too so you can focus on the fun.

Nothing goes to waste at Blencogo Farm. All products sold in the shop are made with 100% Blencogo Farm Alpacas yarn. Alpaca is a luxury yarn; it's a highly skilled and expensive process to be able to make alpaca yarn into clothing. However, the yarn is very durable and should be able to last for a long time.

If you've had a fantastic day out at Blencogo Farm but now need to feed your own hungry animals, there's plenty to eat in the surrounding area, especially in Wigton which is the closest town. Monkey Tree serves delicious Mediterranean food.

The Lakeside Brayton Bar Restaurant Pub serves traditional British food, as does The Aikton Arms. Shuhag Restaurant has tasty Indian food, and The Glasshouse is perfect if you'd like something light to eat.

If you'd like to further explore all that this part of Cumbria has to offer, there are plenty of places you can stay to do so. The Greenhill Hotel has a gorgeous exterior in a classic style or maybe try  Wallace Lane Farm, which is a family favourite.

Fiddleback Farm B&B has plenty of delicious breakfast options. Wheyrigg Hall Hotel is luxurious with its restaurant and enclosed garden.

What to know before you go

  • Blencogo Farm is accessible by wheelchair and by buggy.
  • Wigton has public toilets for use, including baby changing facilities and accessible toilets.
