Sugar gliders are gliding possums who are nocturnal and omnivores in nature. They have a liking towards sugar and sugary food, hence, they have been named sugar glider. They eat sap and nectar.

They look similar to squirrels even though they are not closely associated. They are one of the great anomalies of convergent evolution.

Their whole movement is much like acrobatics and can be compared to rope dancing. Also, their scientific name, petaurus breviceps in Latin, translates to ‘short head rope dancer’. Gliding movement helps them to find and reach food, and escape from predators.

They are endemic to Australia, Queensland and New South wales. Being omnivores, they forage into the forest to find food. They intake the rainwater to pacify their thirst.

They feed on insects, sap, pollen, and fruits. Did you know? Sugar gliders live in colonies of 20 to 40 individuals.
