Present-day Salt Lake City was initially inhabited by Native American tribes.

Such tribes would be Paiute, Goshute, Shoshone, and Ute.

The city was founded in 1847.

Brigham Young, along with 148 Mormon followers founded the city along the banks of the Great Salt Lake.

Salt Lake City was created in the form of square patches of land surrounded by wide streets.

This layout was created with the vision that it would support agriculture in the area.

The original layout has been maintained to a large extent.

Streets were designed to be wide enough to facilitate u-turns made by oxcarts.

Until 1868, this city was known as the Great Salt Lake City. In this year, the 'Great' was removed from the name, resulting in what we know the place by today!

The development of the city was a result of the California Gold Rush that took place in 1849.
