Amazon Kingfisher Fact File

The Amazon kingfisher, or the Chloroceryle amazona, is a brightly colored bird species that is petite, agile, and abundant across Mexico and Central and South America. They are popularly spotted by avid bird watchers perching on branches or rocks close to water before then plunging headfirst into the water to catch their prey.

The first official description of the Amazon kingfisher came from the English ornithologist John Latham in 1790, under the binominal name of Alcedo amazona. The present-day genus, Chloroceryle, was fixed via the works of Johann Jakob Kaup in the year 1848. This is a monotypic species, which means that it has only one species or genus.
