The ghost ant, also known as Tapinoma melanocephalum scientifically, is quite small in length and is found in several countries of North America such as the United States and Canada. The ants are most common in the northern states of the United States. Several pieces of research state that the species was first developed in the African continent.

The female ghost ants or the queens are comparatively larger than the male ghost ants. The average length of these ants is 0.051-0.079 in (1.3-2 mm) while the queens are about 0.098 in (2.5 mm) long.

The head and thorax of the ant are dark brown while the legs and abdomen are translucent or milky white in color. Unlike males, the head and dorsum are pale in the female ghost ants. These ants primarily prey on dead insects and get easily attracted by the smell of sweet foods.
