The origin of giant schnauzers is very unclear. According to speculation, they originally bred through some cross combination of different breeds of dogs such as the great dane, german shepherds, rottweilers, dobermanns, thuringian shepherds, standard schnauzer, and boxers.

A giant schnauzer lifespan is roughly 10 to 12 years. A male schnauzer dog weighs between 60-85 lb (27-38 kg), whereas a female will weigh 55-75 lb (25-34 kg). Male dogs have a height of 26-28 in (66-71 cm) whereas, the female ones are about 23-26 in (58-66 cm) tall.

Most of these dogs were bred to be working dogs. These dogs are not well suited for an apartment as well as an indoor life because they are fairly active dogs. They would also do best with acreage or large spaces to run around.

Giant schnauzers look like the black Russian terrier (Chornyi) and bouvier - the two breeds of dogs that are found in different regions of Russia and Belgium. A giant schnauzer looks a lot like these two breeds of dogs, it is jet black or salt and pepper in color.

This dog has thick distinctive eyebrows, even a thick beard, and a clipping body.
