The golden-mantled tree kangaroo (Dendrolagus pulcherrimus) was discovered as a new species of tree kangaroo in the Torricelli Mountains of Papua New Guinea in 1990.

Again in 2005, the second population of this marsupial species was seen on the Indonesian side of New Guinea. However, scientists believe that few of these animals and their population is continuously decreasing. Due to heavy habitat loss, the golden-mantled tree kangaroo (Dendrolagus pulcherrimus) has been extinct from most of its historical range. Presently they are considered to be the most Critically Endangered species among all the tree kangaroos.

This species of the marsupial is native to the montane forests of Papua New Guinea. Their appearance has a close resemblance to the Goodfellow's tree-kangaroo, almost to the point where the golden-mantled kangaroo is sometimes regarded as a subspecies.
