There exist seven species of gar fish namely, Cuban, Florida, longnose, shortnose, tropical, alligator, and spotted gar. In this article, we will take a look at some fun and interesting facts about the shortnose gar freshwater fish.

Gars are related to bowfin and live primarily in freshwater regions with very few species living in saltwater regions. The species range is also seen in Lake Michigan, Alabama, Louisiana, the Ohio River, Montana, and the Missouri River basins.

They inhabit slow-moving stagnant water bodies and large rivers. They are recognized for their unique feature, their long dart bodies.

Shortnose gar constitutes primarily bones and is not a preferred choice of meat consumed by humans, however, this does not exempt them from being eaten in different parts of the world. Females become sexually mature at six years of age and males between three or four years of age and spawn in May or June. After mating, males accompany females to scatter giant yellowish-green eggs in shallow or quiet water.

The eggs hatch in seven to nine days and the young gar stay in vegetation and eat zooplankton. The young remain in the yolk sac for another week wherein they feed on insect larvae and small invertebrates.

Young gar lead solitary lives and are less than 10 inches in length. They gar eggs are toxic to birds as well as mammals who feed on eggs.

They are classified as of Least Concern by the International Union For Conservation Of Nature (IUCN).

The shortnose gar is a good sport fish but their popularity as a sport fish is low. Their outer appearance is an elongated body and head containing one row of sharp, conical teeth.

They lack the upper jaw of the alligator gar and have toothed jaws. The width of the upper jaw at the nostrils is less than the diameter of their eyes and they have a long snout.

Shortnose gar are armored with interlocking rows of rhomboid ganoid scales. They vary in color but are more or less similar shades of brown. Their ganoid scales are non-overlapping and diamond-shaped.

They have fins that are smooth and slimy in nature. Shortnose gar have the ability to utilize their bladder-like lungs to extract and use oxygen from swallowed air along with regulated buoyancy.

All species of gar have slight differences however, each one is unique in its own way. They are equally cute to watch from a distance. They are known for their elongated, patterned bodies, bony head, snout, and teeth.

How do they communicate?

They are largely gregarious fish often found in groups of two to five, sometimes along with shortnose gar. Their communication is not well understood however, they have other forms of communication which they make use to attract potential mates. They also communicate through body movements.
