'Tangled' is Disney's first full-length computer-animated fairy tale film and also the 50th animated feature from Walt Disney Studios.

'Tangled' is the story of Rapunzel, and is based on the classic story of how a princess was locked in a tower and she waited for years until a prince arrived and the princess could flee using her long hair.

Rapunzel actually inspires us to go out in the open and explore new things every day, so let us learn more about Rapunzel and her endeavors in the wild world away from her parents.

The director of 'Tangled' is Nathan Greno.

Before working on this Disney Princess movie, he was an in-between artist for Mushu in 'Mulan' and that's how he started his Disney career. He has also worked on 'Meet the Robinsons', 'Brother Bear', and 'Bolt', and even voiced the character Lefty in 'Meet the Robinsons'.

The fictional kingdom in the Disney Princess movie was actually inspired by Mont-Saint-Michel in France and the hidden valley in the movie was inspired by Rocamadour.

The movie is loosely based on Rapunzel and features voices by stars like Zachary Levi, Mandy Moore, and Donna Murphy. The story revolves around a lost young princess, Rapunzel, with long magical blonde hair who wants to leave her lonely tower.

Her foster mother (Mother Gothel) does not want Rapunzel to talk to anyone and forbids her from meeting anyone, but defying the wishes of Mother Gothel, she takes the help of an intruder in the tower to see the world that she has never discovered.

The Disney film was named Rapunzel at first, but later the name was changed to Tangled. The $260 million production cost makes Disney's 'Tangled' one of the most expensive films of all time and also the most expensive animated film ever made.

It certainly is the most expensive Disney film ever made in the animation category.

For any normal person, the first thing to do in the morning is thinking how the day should go. But for Rapunzel, the only thing she did was make the tower look good to please Mother Gothel.

Although the Disney Princess is content with all the chores, she still dreams of starting her real life outside the walls of the tower.

This movie is quite different from the other Disney movies made before. Rapunzel has always been known for her bravery, curious nature, adventurous personality, and kind nature and that makes her stand out as a Disney Princess like no other.

Disney's 'Tangled' shows us exactly that, as Rapunzel wants to leave for just a day to see where the lights are coming from.

On this adventure, she meets Flynn Rider who breaks into the tower, and together they embark on a journey to see the lights. Dealing with that amount of hair and still enjoying the outside world is not an easy task, but Rapunzel does it brilliantly.

Fun Facts About 'Tangled'

Let's read some fun facts related to Disney's 'Tangled'.

Rapunzel's hair is quite significant to the story of Disney's 'Tangled' as unless Rapunzel cuts her hair, it has the capability to heal anyone. Mother Gothel used this power to remain young and this is why she never let Rapunzel leave the tower.

Rapunzel's parents do not speak a single word during the entire duration of the movie. It's something you don't notice at the first glance, but shocking nonetheless.

'Tangled' was the first for the production house to try a full-length computer-animated fairy tale film. They succeeded with flying colors as the movie became successful all over the world.

Disney wanted to put fireworks in the movie in place of the lanterns but later changed the idea as lanterns looked better and beautiful and went well with the storyline of Disney's 'Tangled'. John Ripa, the story artist, came up with the idea of putting lanterns in place of fireworks in the movie.

Rapunzel is the first Disney Princess with magical or supernatural powers. Her long and beautiful hair could heal anyone.

But this only worked if the hair isn't cut. This is particularly seen in the scene where Rapunzel heals Flynn's hand after signing the song that activates the power of the magical flower. This is the only time in 'Tangled' that the song is fully sung.

For the scene in which Rapunzel enters the marketplace, Disney animators took the idea from the entrances of Walt Disney World and Disney Land to design them.

The age gap between the Disney couple Rapunzel and Flynn Rider is pretty big. In the movie, Rapunzel is around 18 years old, while Flynn Ryder is 26.

Mandy Moore always wanted to be a Disney Princess and her wishes were fulfilled when she got to voice Rapunzel in this roller coaster of a movie.

The first ideas of the movie were based on a crossover between the fairy world and San Francisco.

Tangled was made fully in computer, in CGI, but it was made so that it feels like hand-drawn animation like previous movies like Snow White. The fluidity of the shots was still there. It took six years to build technology to render the hair of the title character properly and show it more effectively.

There were a lot of expectations from 'Tangled' as it was Disney's 50th animated film, and it surely delivered on its promise. The money spent on the movie was well worth it. It is one of the most expensive movies of all time and the first Disney Princess movie to get a PG rating.

Rachel Rogers gave the voice for young Rapunzel during the initial phase of production. Also, during the movie, Rapunzel is always barefoot, this symbolizes her gullibility and also indicates that she was never given shoes as a way to symbolize that she shouldn't try and run away from the tower.

'Tangled' is set on the backdrop of the fictional world and kingdom of Corona. It is filled with people. You can see a nod to that during the Kingdom dance scene where there are over 3000 people present. This is by far the largest crowd used in any Disney film.

Rapunzel is shown to be very talented in the movie even though she lives locked up in the tower. She could play the guitar, sing, make pottery, and had many more talents.

Facts About Rapunzel

Rapunzel is a Disney Princess that has been portrayed in the movie 'Tangled'.

Glen Keane was the person who originally pitched the idea for the Rapunzel movie for Disney. He was the character animator for Beast, Ariel, Pocahontas, and Tarzan.

He wanted the Rapunzel movie to be a sincere fairy tale. Disney approached the movie differently as there were talks of it being a satire and even named the movie Rapunzel Unbraided.

Glen was against this plan and he said he cannot work on it unless the idea was reversed. It did get reversed and we got to see Rapunzel in all her actions.

Disney has been going back and forth with the Rapunzel story since 1937. The story had to wait as Disney prioritized Snow White and the latter went into production.

Facts About Other Characters From The Movie

There are many important characters in the movie apart from Rapunzel herself.

Idina Menzel auditioned for the role of Rapunzel. But she got the role to voice Elsa instead.

Rapunzel's parents had the worst guards ever. There were failures from them during the entire duration of the movie. Mother Gothel could easily sneak into the castle without anyone knowing, take baby Rapunzel with her, and even get away with it.

The song 'You Are My Forever', sung by Alan Menken, was originally sung by Mother Gothel (the Disney villain) to Rapunzel. Mother Gothel was voiced by Donna Murphy.

Mandy Moore and Zachary Levi just met once during the shooting of the duet song. This is quite shocking for a Disney couple to meet just once, isn't it?

Did you notice that Pascal in Disney's 'Tangled' is actually green? Well, artists first wanted to make the pet purple, but to better contrast the hair and clothes of the Disney Princess, the Disney animators made it green.

Easter Eggs In The Movie

It is quite fascinating to see characters crossover in Disney movies and it was a happy moment for most fans when they realise the cameo.

In a scene where Rapunzel and Eugene are in the library, you can clearly see a book with a cover of 'The Little Mermaid'. This is also a little crossover no one envisioned before.

If you watch closely, you can also notice some nods to Disney classics like 'Pinocchio', 'Sleeping Beauty', 'The Little Mermaid', 'Frozen', and 'Beauty and the Beast'.

This movie symbolizes light and darkness. The flower shows light as in granting life. It was a symbol to heal and grant life. Rapunzel also in the whole film, never falls ill and always remains happy, symbolizing life.

When the hair was cut, it turned brown and the healing power vanishes. Mother Gothel also loses her young skin, symbolizing darkness. Mother Gothel turns to dust at the end when Flynn cuts Rapunzel's hair which shows all the healing going back decades is reversed.

The story is developed using light and darkness as light represents life and healing and darkness represents loss and death.

You can see the main characters in the movie wearing clothes that reflect their personalities. Rapunzel wears purple in the movie that is often associated with royalty, and you can clearly see the glimpses of royalty in the whole movie.
