Being an English businessman, Joseph Bruce Ismay was an essential part of the team of maiden voyages of one of the biggest ships, the Titanic. Joseph Bruce Ismay was born on December 12, 1862, as the child of Margaret Bruce and Thomas Henry Ismay in Crosby, Lancashire.
A fun fact about the mother of Joseph Bruce Ismay is that his mother was the daughter of a shipowner named Luke Bruce.
The Father of J Bruce Ismay, Thomas Bruce Ismay, was the founder of the famous company, the white star line. He was also a senior partner with Ismay, Imrie, and the company.
J Bruce Ismay did his schooling at Elstree School, and Harrow in France, and B Bruce Ismay received his apprenticeship along with his father for four years. Later he went on a world tour.
Besides strict maritime affairs and ship business, Bruce Ismay was also one among the team of the foundation of Liverpool Ramblers football club in 1882. In 1888 on December 4, J Bruce Ismay married his wife, Julia Florence Schieffelin.
Julia Florence was the child of Julia Matilda Delaplaine and George Richard Schieffelin of New york. Later, J Bruce Ismay and Julia Florence had five children.

J Bruce Ismay was the managing director of the white star line. Younger Ismay always had a love for business, and he would always try to be with and in his father's office. Thomas Ismay included Bruce Ismay in his works and other projects as a partner by seeing his son's enthusiasm.
Later, after Thomas Bruce Ismay died, J Bruce Ismay became the company's new chairman in 1899. Bruce Ismay could bring the white star line into the name of luxury liners under his excellent direction. His continuous efforts for the white star line made him promoted into the position of president of IMM in 1904.
Later in a dinner with William James Pirrie in 1907, who had the control of the shipbuilding company of Harland and Wolff, they both came across a plan to build the finest large maiden voyage ships of luxury to compete with the Cunard line. They hoped for high profit from the transatlantic passenger trade from their luxury-built ships.
In 1911 they successfully built their first mission, the Olympic, which immediately succeeded and received fame among merchant mariners.
Taking up the family business in great heights, Bruce Ismay decided to make another such legend with William James Pirrie and Harland and Wolff to construct another masterpiece RMS Titanic in 1912, which they believed was never sink titanic.
Before that, Bruce Ismay wanted to excel his father's work of RMS Oceanic by building four ocean liners; the big four: RMS Baltic, RMS Celtic, RMS Adriatic, and RMS Cedric.
These ships were designed for luxury and size rather than for speed. In 1902, Bruce Ismay was known to have overseen the sale of his family's white star line to J.P Morgan and Co.
The company was the one that was organizing the formation of the international mercantile marine company, which was an Atlantic shipping combine of several major British lines and American lines.
Bruce Ismay: Role In The Titanic
To answer in a competitive way to RMS Lusitania and RMS Mauretania, Bruce Ismay and Lord Pirrie of Harland and Wolff got together in 1907 to discuss the white star line's competitor designs of luxury ships to beat Cunard line ships.
What Bruce Ismay and Lord Pirrie had planned was not a speed ship but a luxuries treat in the history of ocean moving steamships. Their luxuries and spacious features were intended to attract the wealthy people of the high middle-class elites. The main three ships planned were RMS Olympic, RMS Titanic, and RMS Britannic.
During the construction of the first two Olympic class liner cadet-ship designs, Bruce Ismay reduced the number of lifeboats from 48 to 16 as allowed by the board of trade on RMS Olympic's tonnage limit. Bruce Ismay always accompanied his built ships' maiden voyages.
Following his pattern, he also accompanied the sail in his most historic and famous built ship RMS Titanic.
During the trial, Bruce Ismay discussed a speed test if there was time along with his fellow captain Smith and the chief engineer of titanic Joseph Bell. But unfortunately, Ismay's actions and commands resulted in a titanic disaster.
On April 14, 1912, the ship was hit by an iceberg due to excessive speed and loss of control. During the ship's sinking, many people were saved and rescued by letting them travel in lifeboats.
Not all were able to be saved. Many lost seamen were later acknowledged by these titanic chronicles of sink in the British press.
But as an elite and the owner of the white star line, Bruce Ismay was rescued in Collapsible C, which the Carpathia picked 3-4 hours after they left the sinking ship.
Before 20 minutes, it had sunk entirely under the cold waters taking down many innocent lives with it. He was shocked by the sinking of their unsinkable invention of fine luxuries ship, the RMS Titanic.
Bruce Ismay: Place Of Burial
After being rescued by Carpathia from the lifeboat, Bruce Ismay was taken to the ship's doctor cabin of Frank Mcgee. From there, he sent a regretful message of the Titanic sinking to captain Rostron to the White Star Line's office in New York City.
Bruce Ismay was highly devastated by his failure and even could not eat anything on his journey back. On reaching back in New York City, he was hosted by the vice president Philip Franklin of the company.
In later days, Bruce Ismay had to be present before boards and was summoned to appear in front of a Senate committee to testify about the titanic disaster.
The disastrous event drew criticism to Bruce Ismay for not helping women and children safe onboard lifeboats during the sinking.
Some paper covers even described him as 'coward of the titanic' and 'J Brute Ismay.' Both Ismay and a first-class passenger named William Carter, who boarded on Collapsible C, said that there were no other people around them, especially any women and children, for letting them go in the boat.
So they got into them and made countless in the number of people who lost their lives due to the Titanic's sinking.
Many controversies happened later, and many papers were made supporting and opposing Bruce Ismay for the mistake. He even had to resign from the position of president of the international mercantile marine and, as the chairman of the white star line giving up the position to Harold Sanderson.
By the 1930s, Bruce suffered health decline and was diagnosed with diabetes. The disease became worse in early 1936.
Bruce Ismay died in his bedroom in Mayfair, London suffering from a massive stroke after three days on October 17 at the age of 74 in 1937. He had his funeral held at St. Paul's Knightsbridge on October 21 and burial at Putney Vale Cemetery in London.
