Dominican Republic Flag History
Dominican Republic's national flag has changed over time. Initially, the French colonists established a small colony of Saint-Domingue (now Haiti). The evolution of the first flag and judicial power started there.
When the Spanish ruled Santo Domingo years ago, now the capital of the Dominican Republic, the national flag was seen to be a cross on a white color background with a burgundy color. In 1795, when the French took over Santo Domingo, a new flag was adopted for it.
This time the flag was made up of three colors, blue, white, and vermilion red, in vertical rows.
However, in 1809, when the Spanish Empire rose to power, the flag was changed to what it was before, the burgundy flag with the cross. The Burgundy Cross represented the Spanish influence.
Again in 1821, Santo Domingo was known to have become the republic of Spanish Haiti which led to the development of the flag having a tricolor of yellow, ultramarine blue, and red with five stars in the blue part in a dome-shaped.
After Haitian rule, this Dominican flag also was changed after a year when Hispaniola took over Santo Domingo.
The newly designed flag was a horizontal strip of blue and red with a coat of arms at the center of it.
After all these events, the Dominican Republic was free from rulers and gained its independence in 1844. This time the flag changed to two horizontal stripes of blue and red with a white cross at the center.
At the center of the white cross, there was a coat of arms. Today, the Dominican Republic has a national flag with a Bible in the center. This is because the revolutionary people at that time wanted to highlight their Christian heritage.
