Jeju island spans over 707.8 sq. mi (1,833.2 sq. km) making it the biggest island in South Korea. Jeju island is 45 mi (73 km) from east to west and 25 mi (41 km) from north to south.

The island is beneath the Korean Peninsula, south of the South Jeolla Province. This self-governing province is oval-shaped.

Jeongwol Daeboreum Fire Festival

Jeongwol Daeboreum is a traditional Korean festival. Daeboreum means full moon. It commemorates the first full moon day.

Koreans celebrate this occasion by performing ancient practices and wishing for an auspicious year ahead. The festival mainly focuses on Daljip which is a massive bonfire. The bonfire is made of twigs and straws, which are stacked in a triangular pattern. This structure, referred to as home, has a little entrance towards the east side of the moon.

It is believed that the moon enters the home through the entrance. The Daljip is lit when the moon rises. The fire from the home is said to bring good fortune for the following year and fend off bad spirits and negative energies.

In the 1970s, this festival was outlawed for a while as it threatened the safety of people and was against the fire prevention policy of the Korean government. In 1977, the ban was lifted as a result of huge public demand. Jeongwol Daeboreum is celebrated for three days. It takes place against Jeju island's stunning backdrop.

Most of the luxurious hotels are situated in Seogwipo's urban centers and Jeju City. Seogwipo's Jungmun Tourist Resort Complex has some of the most opulent alternatives on the entire island.

This market is well known for its live and fresh marine food. It is the largest market on the island of Jeju. Dongmun Market combines a street market, a seafood market, and a night market.

Some of the other supermarkets are Matro (Tap Dong, ilDo), home plus (Seogwipo), Jesco (Jeju City), Woori mart (Moseulpo), and Hong mart (Moseulpo). You can also find pet food and other pet care items in these markets.

Popular Areas Of Jeju City

The name, Cheonjiyeon Waterfall is quite popular in South Korea. According to folklore, seven fairies fall from the sky at night and bathe in this waterfall. The Cheonjiyen Waterfall is 72 ft (22 m) high.

Since the waterfall is illuminated, it is best to visit it at night. It is a popular couple's spot. It has several rare plants and animals.

A landscape trail leads to the illuminated waterfall. Cheonjiyeon Waterfall is one of the most famous waterfalls in South Korea. Jeongbang waterfall near Seogwipo city is also a wonderful tourist spot.

The Jeju Folk Village Museum displays the dynamic culture and soul of the Korean people that was passed down by their ancestors. The base year of Jeju Folklore Village was 1890, the end of the Joseon period.

There are about 100 houses and buildings. Several years ago, they were used as actual residential areas. A wide variety of folk objects are on show.

Jeju Teddy Bear Museum was opened recently in 2004. Children find the teddy bear museum quite amusing. The museum has a variety of teddy bears. It has two galleries as well as a museum gift store and a museum cafe. It also has bars and restaurants on the premises for adults.

Various folklore artifacts from 1984 are on show in the natural history museum. These artifacts were discovered in Jeju Do and are extremely important in South Korean history. Hallim Park is one of the renowned tourist destinations on Jeju island. Hallim park was built in 1975 on a desolate terrain. Several beautiful beaches are found on the north coast of this park.

The park looks out into the stunning scenery of Biyangdo Island, Hyeopjae Beach, and Geumneung Beach. Aside from the magnificent gardens, the park also features attractions like the Hyeopjaegul caverns and the Ssangyonggul Caverns. These are the world's only two-dimensional caverns.

Yeomiji botanic garden, an indoor garden in Jeju-do, South Korea. The rare plants and several species of trees and flowers have contributed to its recognition as one of the best botanical gardens in Asia. Yeomiji botanic garden is well known for its tropical fruits and water lilies.

Seongsan Ilchulbong or sunrise peak, a volcanic crater, was formed five thousand years ago by volcanic eruptions. It spans over the southern coast of Jeju island.

The structure of Seongsan Ilchulbong shares a lot of similarities with a massive ancient castle. There are 222 taxa of flora in this region. It stands 0.11 mi (182 m) tall and has six rare plant species.

Jeju Mini land is a miniature museum that has small replicas of popular attractions from all over the world. One of the most interesting things about the museum is the 116 architectural wonders that are around the place.

It also has world heritage monuments like the Wall of China, Leaning Tower of Pisa, Statue of Liberty and other UNESCO world heritage sites from 50 nations.

The dormant volcano Mount Hallasan is 1.2 mi (1947 m) high and situated in Jeju si. It is one of the most preferred hiking spots. Though the mountain is quite high, it is easy to climb. Mount Hallasan is the highest mountain in Korea.

The name is derived from words meaning universe and pull. It implies that the mountain is tall enough to pull the universe. Jeju Haenyeo museum and Osulloc tea museum are some of the other famous tourist spots in South Korea.

Downtown Jeju City

Jeju City, often known as Jeju-si, is the capital of South Korea's Jeju Province. It is also the second biggest city on Jeju Island and reaches all the way across the Korean Peninsula.
