An imaginary society or community that has a perfect set of laws and politics is known as a utopia.

This term was coined and used by Sir Thomas More in 1516 in this book titled 'Utopia'. Most utopian societies in literature are a satire of existing society or time.

Utopian literature is a type of fiction where the story takes place in a perfect or ideal society or the world. 'Gulliver's Travels' by Jonathan Swift is an example of utopian literature. Robert Owen and Charles Fourier are famous utopian socialists.

There have been several attempts to create utopias in the world, however, most of these were rather short-lived.

A world or ideal society where there are no issues of disease, war, poverty, or discrimination can be called a utopian society. This word has its origins in Greek and means 'good place' or 'no place', 'ou' meaning 'no' or 'not', and 'topos' which means 'place'.

The word 'utopia' was first used by Sir Thomas Moore in his book titled 'Utopia'. A fictional island within the Atlantic Ocean was called Utopia in this book.

Another example is the garden of Eden as described in the Bible where there was no knowledge of good and evil. The Federation in the 'Star Trek' series is also an example of utopia.

The word is now used to describe religious, political, or scientific thoughts. The opposite of a utopia is called a dystopia, where there is misery and unhappiness everywhere.

Characteristics Of Utopia

Some of the characteristics of utopian societies are that citizens live in harmony and independent thought is encouraged. People have access to healthcare, employment, and education and there is equality for everyone in society.

Most communities are formed by a figurehead or come together because of a common concept. These societies keep changing to ensure the ideals of the utopian community are maintained.

Types Of Utopia

There can be many types of utopia. Some of these are ecological utopia where people would live in harmony with nature and produce little or no waste and pollution.

The idea of an economic utopia took hold in the 18th century. The work of Karl Marx and Friedrich Engles is said to be that of trying to build a communist society and utopian economy that had the combination of commercialism and capitalism along with socialism.

Religious utopias are where the religion or faith controls all aspects of a person's life. An example of this type of community would be the Amish community in America.

Using scientific ideas to eliminate death and suffering and to make human life better would result in scientific utopias. These try to bring about changes in the human condition and human nature.

Often combined with scientific utopias is technological utopia. Replacing human needs and functions with technology would be an example of this. It is most often portrayed in science fiction movies.

Utopian Communities

The United States had quite a few utopian communities that developed away from mainstream life and were based on the ideas of a person to achieve perfection. Some popular utopian communities in the United States in the 19th century were the Shakers who believed in communal living, celibacy, and gender equality.

It was founded in England by Ann Lee in 1758 and arrived in America in 1774.

The Brook Farm Institute of Agriculture and Education was set by in 1841 at West Roxbury, Massachusetts. It was based on the principle of plain living. It attracted people from all walks of life as the community provided everything from food to housing and clothes. This community closed in 1846.

The Harmony Society also known as the Rappites were founded by Johann Georg Rapp. They comprised of immigrants from Germany in 1803 and settled in the Butler County of Pennsylvania.

The Oneida community was set up in Brattleboro, Vermont by John Humphreys. His followers were also known as 'Perfectionists'. They moved to Oneida, New York, hence the name. The education and rearing of children and meals were all communal activities in this community. This community flourished between 1848−1881.

Fruitlands was another well-known utopian community in the United States. It was set up in 1843 but closed a year later in 1844. It was popularly known as the 'farm without farmers'. It was established by Amos Bronson Alcott and Charles Lane in Harvard, Massachusetts.
