History And Timeline

Styrofoam, the material needed for coolers didn't exist until 1944. Styrofoam was made by Ray 'Otis' Mcintire in 1944 for an American chemical corporation called Dow Chemicals.

RTIC Outdoors established National Cooler Day in 2019 to start Memorial Day weekend by commemorating coolers as a summer need that makes going away, helping out, and partying so much simpler. National Cooler Day was declared by the Registrar of the National Day Calendar in May 2019 and is held each year on the Friday before Memorial Day.

Icebox Was Invented

Thomas Moore, a Maryland farmer, invented the icebox. The design consisted of an oval cedar tub inside of which a tin box was kept. The gap between the tin box and tub was filled with ice.

Patent For The Portable Ice Chest Granted

Richard C. Laramy, a resident of Joliet, Illinois, filed the patent for his portable ice chest. Instead of foam, this ice chest was made with durable metal. The use of this icebox was the storage of food and beverages.

First Solar Cooler Of The World

Ryan McGann designed the world's first solar-powered cooler. The solar-powered icebox could keep up 42 F (5.55 C) temperatures for 24 hours.
