National Fire Service was started on April 14, 1945, to honor the 71 fire service personnel who lost lives during an explosion at freighter SS Fort Stikine at the Victoria Dock in the Bombay Port. The freighter was carrying ammunition consisting of 1400 tons of explosives, miscellaneous cotton bales, and gold cargo.

The explosives caught fire, responsible for two major blasts, and this incident also affected the people living 1700 km away in Shimla. The firefighters lost their lives to support and rescue people to safety.
