History And Timeline

Youth rights emerged in the U.S in the '30s because of the Great Depression and the politicization caused as a result of it. The Vietnam anti-war movement strengthened youth empowerment and activism in the '60s.

The voting age was lowered down to 18 in 1971, and the drinking age was lowered in the '70s. Recently, the internet has helped in inspiring youth self-reliance, self-worth, and activism in today's youth.

American Youth Congress Formed

AYC was formed in 1935. They advocated for the issues the youth were facing in the '30s. These issues included the draft of war and the economic exploitation of the youth. They introduced the American Youth Bill of Rights to the U.S Congress.

The National Youth Administration was sponsored by Franklin D. Roosevelt during his presidency. The agency focused on the availability of education and work for young people between 16 to 25.

The 26th Amendment that lowered the voting age from 21 to 18 was certified by President Nixon. This amendment added 11 million potential voters to the electorate.
