In the '80s, Aquino suffered from two heart attacks and he was sent to the USA for further treatment. After the treatment, he returned to his land from the United States in 1983 to participate in the elections, but he got assassinated. His assassination happened in the Malina International Airport.

Ferdinand Marcos declared himself as the next president, but Aquino's widow Corazon's challenge and mass protests made him fly to Hawaii. Aquino's wife was later elected president.
