The New England Patriots are an American football team based in the Greater Boston area.

The team, founded in 1959 as the Boston Patriots, was a charter member of the American Football League before joining the NFL in 1970. They played home games at Gillette Stadium in Foxborough, Massachusetts.

Since 2002, this privately funded stadium has had all the administrative offices of the team and the Kraft Group. It is also a base for the Kraft-owned, major league soccer team, the New England Revolution.

The Patriots are part of two major teams in the NFL, which represent multiple states. The Patriots hold numerous records in NFL, including one for most Super Bowl victories at six wins, tied with the Pittsburgh Steelers, and losses at 5, tied with the Denver Broncos. The team has dominated the NFL since 2001 under head coach, Bill Belichick, and quarterback Tom Brady.

The Patriots' most bitter rivalries are the New York Giants and the New York Jets. The Patriots have remained members of the AFC East division throughout their existence. Initially, it was AFL East in 1960, and then after the merger of AFL and NFL in 1970, it became AFC East. John Hannah (one of the best offensive linemen to ever play in NFL history), Mike Haynes, and Steve Grogan led the Patriots to successes in the '70s and '80s.

In 1986, they advanced to their first Super Bowl but lost. It took another 11 years before the Patriots could return to the Super Bowl.

History Of New England Patriots

A Boston businessman, Billy Sullivan Junior, bought an AFL franchise and named it the Boston Patriots in November 1959.

A panel of sportswriters in Boston selected the nickname 'Patriots' in line with the area's heritage as the birthplace of the American Revolution.

Finding a suitable home for the Patriots was difficult in the initial years. They played at Boston University Field in 1960 and 1962, at Fenway Park from 1963 to 1968, and at Harvard in 1970. In 1971, the team moved to a new stadium in the town of Foxborough and changed its name to the New England Patriots.

In 1966, a merger was announced between AFL and NFL. Under the agreement, both leagues maintained separate schedules for four seasons and then would officially merge before the 1970 season.

The first-ever pre-season exhibition game in the American Football League featured the New England Patriots, who defeated the Buffalo Bills in July 1960. In the first AFL regular-season game in September 1960, the Patriots lost to the Denver Broncos.

In the year 2001, with a new head coach Bill Belichick and a new quarterback, the Patriots started their dream run with a Super Bowl win. Together, both of them have created a dynasty in New England and have taken the Patriots to new heights.

The Patriots initially wore red jerseys at home and white jerseys when traveling. They wore white helmets with the Pat Patriot logo from 1961. Small changes in the uniform continued until 1993 when a complete overhaul was carried out, and a new 'Flying Elvis' logo was introduced. The new uniforms were royal blue for home and white for away games. Both jerseys had silver pants with red and blue stripes. From the 2020 season, the Patriots have made some changes to the uniform. The all-blue 'color rush' design is the main home uniform.

Players Of New England Patriots

The N.F.L. started in 1920 and, with the merger with A.F.L. in 1970, became the biggest sport in the U.S. The New England Patriots have cemented their place as one of the best teams in the NFL.

The credit for this goes to the head coach and the brilliant players who have given so much joy to the team's fans. The best players over the years are:

Tom Brady: There may not be any other player better than him in the league's history. He played for the Patriots in 2000 and has since won six Super Bowls with them. After 20 years with the Patriots, he signed with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in 2020. Not surprisingly, the winning ways remained with him, and he has become the most successful player with the seventh win, in Super Bowl history, in 2021.

John Hannah: nicknamed 'Hog,' Hannah is considered one of the best offensive linemen in history. He played between 1973 and 1985 and is a member of the Patriots. He is also a member of the Pro Football Hall of Fame.

Andre Tippett played from 1982 to 1993, except in 1989, when he was suffering from injuries. He was a 5-time Pro Bowler and the N.F.L. Defensive Player of the Year in 1985. He is also in the Patriots' Hall of Fame.

Rob Gronkowski: the best Tight End ever to play in the N.F.L. He retired in 2018 after 3 Super Bowl wins, 7861 yards, and 79 touchdowns.

Ty Law played as a cornerback from 1995 to 2004. He was voted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame in 2019. He was popularly known for being a 3-time Super Bowl champion.

Mike Haynes: Haynes played from 1976 to 1982 for the Patriots. He went on to win the Super Bowl title with the Raiders.

John Morris: he was one of the best players of the Boston Patriots and played for the team between 1964 and 1974.

Bruce Armstrong played as Offensive Tackle and was a six-time Pro Bowler after joining the league. He retired in 2000, and the Patriots retired his jersey number 78.

Logan Mankins played as the left guard and left tackle between 2005 and 2013 and missed only 14 games in 11 seasons. He was a seven-time Pro Bowler.

The N.F.L. is home for all-American football.

Championships Won By The New England Patriots

The American Football Conference (A.F.C.) and National Football Conference (N.F.C.) together make up the American N.F.L.

Each conference has 16 teams; the top six teams from both conferences play with each other. The undefeated team in each conference plays in the Super Bowl. NFC teams have 24, and AFC teams have 20 Super Bowls. The New England Patriots are a part of the AFC and have many championships under their belt. Their super bowl wins are:

36 (2002): defeated the Rams

38 (2004): defeated the Panthers

39 (2005): defeated the Eagles

49 (2015): defeated the Seahawks

51 (2017): defeated the Falcons

53 (2019): defeated the Rams

Apart from these victories, they also won the AFC championship several times. The years they won are: 1985, 1996, 2001, 2003, 2004, 2007, 2011, 2014, 2016, 2017, 2018.

So, all in all, the Patriots have advanced to six Super Bowl championships (XXXVI, XXXVIII, XXXIX, XLIX, LI, and LIII). They also participated in and lost Super Bowls XX, XXXI, XLII, XLVI, and LII. New England Patriots were also runner-ups in Super Bowl 5 and AFC championship many times, making them one of the first teams to be successful and consistent in NFL history. The Buffalo Bills were their rivals in the AFC championship as both teams played for the East Division.

One of the biggest and most incredible victories in the league's history came in Super Bowl LI. The Patriots overcame a 25-point deficit and defeated Atlanta Falcons 34-28 in overtime. Bill Belichick won his 5th title and became the only head coach with many wins in NFL history. Tom Brady set several records in the game, including most passes (62), most completions (43), and most passing yards (466). The Super Bowl XXXVI was the first win when they defeated the Rams 20-17. The Patriots won Super Bowl XLIX by defeating Seattle Seahawks 28-24. Super Bowl XLIX became a great victory when the Pats returned from a 10-point deficit and won.

The sixth Super Bowl win was probably the dullest, unlike the Super Bowl XLIX. They defeated the Los Angeles Rams 13-3, which was the lowest-scoring championship game in NFL history. However, this win brought them to a tie with the Pittsburgh Steelers for most Super Bowl wins by a single franchise.

Owner Of New England Patriots

Presently, the New England Patriots' owner is Robert Kraft, an American industrialist who founded the Kraft Group.

The first owner of the Patriots team was Billy Sullivan, a Boston businessman. He and his partner wanted to be a part of the N.F.L. but could not join it. Sullivan owned the professional team until 1988, when he sold it to Victor Kiam for $85 million, but remained the president through 1992. In 1992, the club ownership again changed hands to James Orthwein.

It was James Orthwein who brought the order back to management within a short period of two years. In 1994, he sold the team for $175 million to Robert Kraft, who remains the owner to date.

Under Robert Kraft's ownership, the Patriots have performed brilliantly and consistently, becoming the most successful franchise in the NFL. Today the team is valued by Forbes to be worth approximately $5 billion. In 1988 he acquired what is today Gillette Stadium and eventually acquired the team in January 1994.

In 2000, Kraft hired Bill Belichick as the head coach, and soon the team turned into a winning machine. Kraft also built Gillette Stadium in 2002, on the adjoining site of the Foxborough Stadium. This then became the home stadium for the Patriots and has remained so to date.
