Steve Harrington has many shades in all seasons. He played as an antagonist in season one and later became a protagonist from season two onwards.

Eventually, he realizes his misjudgment and goes to Jonathan's house to say sorry to her, but sees them getting attacked by a Demogorgon. All three of them fight with it and defeat it, and he becomes close to Nancy again.
In season two, Steve's character is shown as a good guy but having difficulty with his love, Nancy, who does not want him to be her boyfriend anymore. At Hawkins High School, he confronts the new tough kid, Billy Hargrove, and becomes a 'babysitter' for the way too young Mike, Dustin, Lucas, and Max, who is related to Billy.
When Demodogs attack the kids, he displays great courage and becomes a savior to them.
In season three, Steve finishes school with his old classmate Robin and works at Scoops Ahoy, an ice cream shop in Starcourt mall. They come across a Russian message on ham radio and know about a secret Russian underground base in the mall trying to open upside down.
To sneak in, they take the help of Erica, who is related to Lucas, but are eventually caught and drugged. Kids Dustin and Erica save them and come onto the ground to warn others.
In the fight that ensues, the mall gets destroyed. In the end, Steve finds work at a Family Video.
