They use their feet for crawling and the head comprises tentacles that contain sensory organs. The average length of a Kahuli snail is around 0.08 ft (2.4 cm). These snails are quite commonly found in Hawaii on the island of O’ahu.


Their habitat includes native trees and shrubs. Predators like rats and Jackson’s chameleon prove to be a threat to the kahuli snails.

The diet of a kahuli snail includes fungus found in the tree leaves. A kahuli snail is also known as ‘pūpū kani oe’ which translates to a ‘shell that sounds long’. They are also known as the inspiration behind the traditional Hawaiian chants ‘mele’.
