They are called foals till they reach the age of four. The male kid horse is called foal and the female kid horse is called filly. They are equines from the family of Equidae.


Foal suckles to get nursed from their mother, also called dam. Foals, after a year, are more of a yearling than a foal.

And when they are over four years old they are called mares and over three they are called stallions. There is a certain breed among horses who are of a short stature even after gaining maturity.

They are called ponies. Weaning just like humans is crucial for a foal. All domesticated foals are introduced to weaning after six months of their birth.

Foals may grow up tall but they are not fit to ride until they mature. As they grow, they become stronger, and develop great running speed.
