'The Witcher' series is a fantasy novel written by Polish writer Andrzej Sapkowski.

In 1986, Sapkowski submitted a fictional short story in a competition for a magazine that finished third. Despite the disappointing result, Sapkowski didn't give up and continued writing the books that soon after became a cult hit in Poland.

Geralt, owing to his success in training, was selected for mutation experiments and became the only Witcher to service these experiments. His white hair is a side effect of the experiments.

He sets off into the world after finishing his training. He is often seen as an apathetic, cynical, and threatening character.

As the story progresses we see more of him and the events revolving around him eventually becoming a legendary Witcher in the world. After he slays a band of mercenaries who are out to kill him in Blaviken, he earns the infamous name 'The Butcher Of Blaviken' that sticks with him.
