Shrek is a strangely cute fictional ogre who first appeared in 1990 in a fairy tale picture book by William Steig.
In 2001, 'Shrek' the movie came out, which was directed by Andrew Adamson and Vicky Jenson, and Mike Myers gave voice to Shrek. It premiered at the Cannes Film Festival in the same year and was the first animated film since Disney's 'Peter Pan' to compete for the Palme d'Or.
In 'Shrek 2', the married Shrek and Fiona are invited by Fiona's parents, King Harold and Queen Lilian, in their Far Far Away land, to a royal ball to celebrate their marriage.
However, on meeting, Harold disapproves of Shrek; the two argue; and Shrek finds out that Fiona once had an infatuation on Prince Charming, who Fiona was promised to in an arrangement between Harold and Fairy Godmother, the mother of Prince Charming.
Afterwards, Shrek and Donkey went to hunt with Harold that involved a failed attempt to murder Shrek by the cat assassin, hired by King Harold, called Puss in Boots, who decided to join Shrek.
They steal the "Happily Ever After" potion from Fairy Godmother's factory, which transforms Shrek into a handsome man and as discovered later, Fiona to her prior human self.
Fairy Godmother comes to know of the threat, sends Prince Charming to win Fiona's heart and conspired to make Fiona fall in love with Prince Charming by the help of a love potion which she asked King Harold to slip in Fiona's tea.
Shrek, Donkey and Puss in Boots overhear this conversation and are locked away by the castle guards. To retain the effects of the potion forever, princess Fiona is to be kissed before midnight.
Shrek, along with Donkey and Puss in Boots, breaches the defenses of the castle with the help of Shrek's friends and a monstrous gingerbread man of the Muffin Man, and find that princess Fiona is enraged instead of being flattered by the kiss of Prince Charming.
It is then revealed that Harold never gave the love potion to his daughter; and he tries to protect Shrek from the rage of Fairy Godmother, destroying her in the process. However, King Harold is now transformed into the Frog Prince, his true self.
He admits using the Happily Ever After potion years ago to win Lilian's love.
Lilian assures him that she still loves him; and Princess Fiona refuses Shrek's offer to remain as humans. They are happily turned back to their ogre forms.
People love both 'Shrek' and 'Shrek 2', and it cannot be said which movie is better.
The movie came out in 2004. Directed by Andrew Adamson, Kelly Asbury, and Conrad Vernon, it however exceeded its predecessor in a lot of aspects; and is considered to be the best movie in the series unanimously.

Long Quote From 'Shrek 2'
The opening lines of 'Shrek 2' are quite funny. It may be long but it needs a special mention!
30.
"Once upon a time, in a kingdom far, far away, the king and queen were blessed with a beautiful baby girl, and throughout the land everyone was happy, until the sun went down, and they saw that their daughter was cursed with a frightful enchantment that took hold each and every night.
Desperate, they sought the help of a fairy godmother, who had them lock the young princess away in a tower, there to await the kiss of the handsome Prince Charming.
It was he who would chance the perilous journey through blistering cold and scorching desert, traveling for many days and nights, risking life and limb to reach the dragon's keep, for he was the bravest, and most handsome in all the land, and it was destiny that his kiss would break the dreaded curse.
He alone would climb to the highest room of the tallest tower to enter the princess's chambers, cross the room to her sleeping silhouette, pull back the gossamer curtains to find her- gasp!"
- Prince Charming.
