Elizabeth Blackwell was the first woman to receive a medical degree in the United States, in 1847.

Famously known for being the first woman to make her mark on the Medical Register of the General Medical Council. Elizabeth also founded a hospital, a nonprofit, acute care, teaching hospital in the United States.

Elizabeth started her career as a teacher, but soon she realised it wasn't the right choice.

Her interest in medicine peaked after a friend of hers fell ill. She remarked that she might not have suffered to such extremes if it were a female doctor who would've cared for her.

She is a pioneer, it is fascinating how she made education in medicine an important thing for women in the United States as well as the United Kingdom. She rightly said, "The idea of winning a doctor's degree gradually assumed the aspect of a great moral struggle, and the moral fight possessed immense attraction for me."

Another quote that she said while living her life was, "I must have something to engross my thoughts, some object in life which will fill this vacuum, and prevent this sad wearing away of the heart."

It is hard to say that Elizabeth Blackwell invented anything, other than the promotion of equality within the medical profession.
