In the movie, Jack Torrance (Jack Nicholson), a writer, becomes a winter caretaker at an isolated Overlook Hotel hoping to get inspiration for his book. He settles in along with his wife and son named Wendy (Shelley Duvall) and Danny (Danny Lloyd), respectively.
Danny is gifted with psychic abilities which allows him to see the hotel's horrific past. Slowly, Jack loses his sanity due to the supernatural forces at the hotel and becomes a maniac, and tries to kill his family.
The rest of the story revolves around how Wendy and Danny escape from Jack. In the end, Wendy and Danny leave the hotel safely while Maniac Jack freezes to death.
