Walter Jerry Payton was an American professional football athlete.

He was a running back for the Chicago Bears of the National Football League (NFL) for 13 long seasons. He is widely regarded as one of the most celebrated football players of all time.

Walter Payton began his football career in Mississippi and had an outstanding collegiate football career at Jackson State University. He began his professional career with the Chicago Bears in 1975, who selected him as the 1975 Draft's fourth overall pick.
