National Cancer Survivor Day is celebrated throughout the United States of America annually to recognize cancer survivors and those undergoing cancer treatment.
National Cancer Survivor Day is observed by cancer research organizations in the United States, cancer survivors and their families, organizations related to cancer in any way, and even by those whose family member is still fighting this deadly disease.
National Cancer Survivor Day was held for the first time on June 5, 1988. The idea was first introduced in 1987 by Merril Hastings at the second conference of the National Coalition for Cancer Survivorship in Albuquerque, New Mexico.
National Cancer Survivor Day was the brainchild of Merril Hastings and was started by the National Coalition for Cancer Survivorship, a not-for-profit organization.
There is not a lot of history behind the establishment of National Cancer Survivor Day but some of the most important events related to the history of the day are as follows.
There are no particular traditions or customs observed for National Cancer Day. Everyone observes this day in their own way. Every year many people come together to spread awareness through demonstrations and, in some cases, rallies. Support groups can host meetings to celebrate, honor, and motivate cancer survivors and use this opportunity to educate the masses about the ongoing challenges faced by cancer survivors regarding their health. Due to the influence of medicines used to treat the disease, survivors can still face several health challenges even after they recover.
National Cancer Survivor Day can be observed in several ways. Some common ways to observe this day include: spreading awareness about cancer and cancer survivors; doing cancer survivors’ favorite activities or something they have wanted to do for a long time; visiting a cancer patient’s center with proper permission from the authorities to conduct an encouraging talk or engaging and safe activities which they can enjoy; encouraging cancer patients to try new things and motivating them to take part in activities to observe the day.
Local schools, hospitals, and other authorities also come together on the streets, and host parades, art exhibits, competitions, and carnivals as a method of honoring cancer survivors. These events can be witnessed in every part of the country in different measures, but all local communities come together each year showing their solidarity.
Many support groups also come together to discuss the ongoing challenges faced by those who have survived cancer, and some even host recently diagnosed people to prepare them for what they may expect. A cancer patient and survivor’s struggle is long. There can be ongoing challenges years after someone beats this disease.
National Cancer Survivors Day is observed annually on the first Sunday of June.
National Cancer Awareness Day is an observation that coincides with the birth anniversary of Marie Curie on November 7.
Every year, the first Sunday of June is observed as National Cancer Survivor Day.
In 2022, National Cancer Survivor Day will be on June 5. It is observed on the first Sunday of June.
