About Cratchit
What is Cratchit about?
On a bitterly cold winter in London, there were actually two people visited by ghosts on a bleak and haunted Christmas Eve, Ebenezer Scrooge and Bob Cratchit. Based on the popular Dickens character, the play takes Cratchit on a time-bending journey via Christmas Future.
The word 'cratch' means 'to eat heartily', so Dickens probably named the clerk Cratchit as the family had a feast on Christmas.
In the book, Bob Cratchit is the underpaid abused clerk of Scrooge.
When Cratchit asks his employer for leave on Christmas day, Scrooge denies it and threatens to cut his pay, but later allows Cratchit his family time on the condition that he must be back first thing in the morning the next day.
Scrooge is portrayed to be too miserly in the book, and that is the reason Cratchit and his family live in poverty. Despite this, Cratchit is grateful, happy, and content on Christmas Eve.
Tim Cratchit (Tiny Tim), Cratchit's son, is sick and crippled and the Ghost of Christmas Present (one among the three ghosts) declares that he will die as the family cannot provide proper treatment for his health.
After the turn of events on the bitterly cold winter morning of Christmas, Scrooge changes his ways and promises to take care of Bob's wages and family. Scrooge gave a grand turkey to Cratchit.
Cratchit was poor, not just because Scrooge did not pay him, but also because he wanted a lavish lifestyle and spent all his money. Cratchit, however, loves Scrooge and even toasts him on Christmas night.
This classic tale is the one children will enjoy and the best way to experience this is in the theatre. Book your Cratchit tickets now.
