They resemble the family of ground squirrels. Apart from woodchucks, they are also known as a whistler, whistle pig, ground pig, land beaver, and red monk.

Male groundhogs are slightly larger than their female counterparts. They have four incisor teeth, which are white and ivory white. They are good at digging with their short yet powerful limbs and curved claws.

Their tails are short, unlike the other rodent family. Their average lifespan is two to three years. However, they can live up to six years.

Groundhogs are herbivorous creatures and feed on grass, berries, agricultural crops, and other vegetation. They hibernate in winters, so instead of storing food, they stuff themselves to survive the hibernation period.

They are great burrowers and use the burrows for various activities from sleeping, mating and rearing their young ones. Did you know? Groundhogs are related and similar to squirrels.
