This free printable horse mom and baby coloring pages resource will help enhance kids' knowledge about how a horse mom takes care of their young ones. Horse mom is a female horse, and a female horse is called a mare.

The young of a mare is called a foal.

A female horse can give birth to one foal at a time, but they are capable of giving birth to 16 foals in their lifetime. A mare starts her parental responsibilities or duties right after the foal is born by cleaning the foal.

For the first few weeks, the mare feeds the foal with its milk just like humans. However, the foal is ready to eat grass or graze after six months of feeding with its mother’s milk.

Mare’s milk contains antibodies, which help to build the immunity and strength of the foal’s body.

In the wild, foals can start eating grass within a month of being born. In captivity, domestication or the wild, the mare watches over their babies, and one must be very careful before getting too close to the foal as the mare gets protective of its foal.
