It lived through the era of the middle Eocene and early Oligocene around 30-40 million years ago. Like other fossils, mesohippus was endemic to North America.

The predecessor of Mesohippus was Eohippus. Mesohippus has longer legs than Eohippus.

They had longer legs than its predecessors, with a height of around 23.6 in (60 cm), which is around six hands tall. Mesohippus was the first pterodactyl horse that had the full tridactyl developed.

Mesohippus is a type of horse, which, in the process of evolution, did not yet develop a hoof; rather, it had a pad, much like hyracotherium and Orohippus.

Mesohippus had a face that was longer and bigger than their ancestors, with a slight facial depression in the skull. Mesohippus eyes were set wider apart than the hyracotherium, and they also had well-rounded eyes, which their ancestors lacked.

Did you know? The mesohippus were mammals.
