Baby squirrels are one of the cutest animals, they often ask for help through loud high pitched squeaks; baby squirrels are born vulnerable, if they're too young they might not have developed eyes fully.
Squirrels come in all shapes and sizes, there are tiny squirrels and they are also large squirrels. The most latest species of squirrel is the Indian giant squirrel, they are almost 36 in (91.44 cm) long, the tiniest squirrel in the world is about 5 in (13 cm).
Squirrels are exciting to watch they are quick and very often roam around during noon hours. They also hover around gardens, looking for nuts and seeds.
All squirrels have around four front teeth. These front teeth help the squirrels to rack up nuts and chew through seeds that might be hard to break.
A squirrel grows these front teeth the entirety of its life. However, they still don't appear gigantic, since squirrels chew on nuts often so they wear down constantly, which is why they need to grow on a regular basis.
Although everyone is familiar with ground squirrels, there are multiple species of squirrels that have expertise in different living conditions. When we talk about squirrels, they can be distinguished into three categories.
There is one category of a squirrel which is known as the ground squirrel.
Ground squirrels live on the ground and are also one of the most common kinds of squirrels. Ground squirrels are more common in farms and large gardens.
The other category is the tree squirrels, tree squirrels can be found almost anywhere! As the name suggests tree squirrel lives on the tree and often come down from time to time to collect ground seeds or while going from one tree to another.
The last and one of the most incredible categories of squirrels is the flying squirrels. Flying squirrels are wonderful with the way they live.
They often glide from one tree to another with the help of their flappy skin. Their flappy skin is connected to their limb, which provides them with a surface or an organ that looks very much like a wing.
The species is very intelligent and they are quick to move. They often sense the smell of seeds and nuts and go in that direction.
Therefore, it's not rare to see squirrels breaking into lawns and eating seeds from bird feeders. Squirrels can even smell whether nuts are ripe or not just through their sense of smell.
They are extremely smart with the way they function. Almost every squirrel buries their nuts when they don't need it at the moment.
They have an exceptional memory to remember the place where they have buried their nut.
Squirrels are also smart enough to identify the previously visited soil and when they combine their smell receptors with their excellent memory they can pinpoint the location they buried their food. It's not very common for a baby squirrel to fall from its drey, since they are spherically shaped and assembled with grass and twigs to ensure maximum stability.
However, if in the unfortunate case where a baby squirrel falls from the drey, they call their mothers. Squirrels can communicate with each other, they have a wide range of calls that they understand.
Squirrels can also communicate through their tails, however, the most common form of communication is their quacking and squeaks. Hence, if you hear a baby squirrel's squeaks, that might mean they are calling their mother.
Although, it's possible for a baby squirrel to survive without its mother if proper care is given. If the baby squirrel is a few weeks of age, they should be taken care of.

How do you care for an abandoned baby squirrel?
Squirrels often communicate with each other through calls and loud squeaks. If you find a young squirrel baby squeaking, it is calling for its mother. The best thing to do is wait and look for the mother. Always wait for the mother to come, she will take the baby if it is warm.
The best thing to do is look if it's a dehydrated baby, and warm them in case they are cold. Squirrels don't care about human scent, so you can go and inspect the baby and keep it warm while you wait for the mother.
If there are multiple babies and one of the babies is dead, the squirrel won't take the other babies.
After ruling out the scenario where the mother doesn't come to claim the baby, you can keep the baby. The first thing to do is wrap the baby in a soft cloth and put them on a heating pad to warm the baby squirrel.
However, it's also important to look at the baby squirrel's body for any bruises or bleeding. If the baby is bruised, it's best to take them to a wildlife rehabilitator, since a vet won't be able to inspect them without a license.
Contact wildlife rehabilitation immediately if the baby squirrel is hurt or is bleeding. A baby squirrel needs to stay warm, put them on a heating pad.
To learn if the baby is dehydrated or not, try to pinch the skin of the baby gently.
If the skin takes longer to return back to its normal position the baby squirrel is dehydrated. After bringing them to a heat source such as a hot water bottle, clean them gently with warm water to remove bugs.
A temperature of 99 F (37 C) is required by the baby, it's a must to keep them alive. If the squirrel babies have their eyes closed, that means they are younger than four weeks.
Squirrel baby eyes open once they are three to four weeks of age. Either find a cage or a well-aired container to keep the squirrel warm and place it there.
It's best to use soft clothes, not towels since baby squirrels are extremely fragile and they can break their ankles if the two are rough.
After keeping the baby warm, it's advised to look for the mama one more time. Mothers often keep looking for babies and come to the place multiple times looking for the baby.
What do you feed a baby squirrel that fell out of the nest?
Wild animals are meant to live in their natural habitat, however, in some unfortunate cases, a wild animal must be provided proper care to ensure their safety.
Feeding baby squirrels is not a very difficult task, nonetheless, before feeding the baby you must ensure that they aren't cold. Feeding the baby when they are cold can kill them so it is important to check.
Thus, in order to feed the baby, make sure the baby is warm, and only try feeding them with a suitable milk replacer. Find the right milk replacer and do not give solid food to the baby.
Mix glucose in the food and also a little bit of curd. The baby should be able to digest the food, otherwise, it can be a problem.
It is important to keep feeding session once every four hours. Once they start to digest food, start giving them undiluted milk with curd and stimulate the baby to help them pass urine.
Solid foods are not advised for babies, feeding solid food can cause problems in baby squirrels. It's best to not release the baby, as pets like dogs or cats in the area can eat the baby, along with foxes.
You can attract the mother by keeping uncooked rice beside the baby squirrels. Squirrels have an excellent sense of smell and they can follow the smell of uncooked rice.
How can you tell how old a baby squirrel is?
Baby squirrels are born vulnerable, they have no hair and their eyes are closed. Five days old baby squirrels are completely hairless and they are pink in color. Hence, they may look like baby mice. They are also very small, almost about the size of a thump.
When the baby is one week old, they start developing fur; the fur often appears to be grey at first sight. The baby also doesn't have teeth when they are one week old, they rely entirely on milk.
The eyes are closed at this stage, but the markings of the eye can be seen at this stage. When feeding them at home, a part-powder part-liquid diet would be ideal at this stage.
Squirrel babies start developing teeth when they are three to four weeks old.
The baby starts growing their lower teeth, and they also start moving a little, you can notice the baby yawning. At this stage, they are three to four weeks old.
Before this, they don't even have defined ears, ears start emerging only after this time, not before the age of four weeks old. The tail is not visible but you can see it is starting to grow.
The baby also starts developing white fur at some parts of their body, stomach and neck, and some parts of the legs. The baby doesn't have eyes until it gets to the age of five weeks old, at this age they start developing their eyes.
So if you find a baby that doesn't have eyes, that means they are still younger than five weeks.
When they are five weeks old, they start growing both lower and upper teeth and also sleep more than usual. Apart from yawning, they start crawling, the tail also becomes visible at this stage.
However, the baby at this stage won't try to come out of its cage. Once the baby comes to the age of six to seven weeks, they become a little more active.
At this point, their tail becomes more curved and the baby squirrel will start sitting. The squirrel develops full fur and they won't sleep as much as they did when they were five weeks old.
At six weeks old they may start coming out of their cage and be a little more active.
Once your baby comes to the age of eight weeks, they almost start looking like an adult squirrel. However, in size, they are still small, but they are as active as an adult squirrel.
They develop sharp claws and sharp teeth, once they reach the age of 10 weeks, they are fully adult and have developed full teeth and fur. At this age, the squirrel is excessively active and will start exploring the outdoors.
At what age can a baby squirrel survive on its own?
The best thing to do after finding a baby is to heat them with a heating pad or with the help of a warm water bottle. If the baby is injured, get them to a wildlife rehabilitator.
Baby squirrels can fall from their nest sometimes, however, most times if proper steps are taken they can be reunited with their mother.
It's advised to look for the mother while also providing care to the baby; mothers will often look for their babies for a long time. They visit the same place multiple times hoping to find their baby.
Squirrels are not meant to be indoor animals and they thrive best in nature. However, if a baby squirrel is abandoned and the mother is not taking the baby back, it is important to provide the baby with care.
If the baby is younger than eight weeks, it cannot survive on its own. Baby squirrels cry when they are hungry and they can't go more than four hours without eating.
It is important to take care during feeding, so that you don't overfeed the baby, as that can be a problem as well. Feeding the animal is an essential step, and feeding them right can save their life. However, once a squirrel grows over the age of 10 weeks, they leave.
Nonetheless, a squirrel remembers their humans. They often come around to reconnect with their humans.
Squirrels have excellent memory and they are intelligent creatures who tend to remember their time spent with their humans. Special care should be given while feeding them, as they cry when they aren't fed properly.
