Buffalo fish can be of five species. These are bigmouth buffalo, smallmouth buffalo, Fleshy Lip, Black Buffalo, and Usumacinta fish. These are all found in different areas, especially the North American regions and have different characteristics that distinguish one from the other.

Where does a buffalo fish live?

The buffalo fish species are found in most North American parts, in the United States as well as in Canada, Mexico, and Guatemala.

The bigmouth buffalo is native to the Mississippi River drainage basins and Red River of the North, right from the upper reaches in Canada down to the downstream river reaches of Texas and Alabama in the US.

The smallmouth buffalo also lives in similar regions of North American regions.

What is a buffalo fish's habitat?

Buffalo fish species are found in fast-moving streams as well as standing water, mostly in the North American regions. These fish are also found in creeks, dams, freshwater lakes, and ponds. Being hardy fish these can survive in different alkalinity levels of water.

These are mostly bottom feeders and hence seen at the bottom of the water bodies in which they are found. The buffalo fish populations can survive in water that is low in oxygen and hard in nature. This is a function of its own basic hardiness.

How do they reproduce?

Spawning of the buffalo fish species happens mostly in the spring and during the months of April to June. In the case of the bigmouth buffalo, they lay their eggs on plants to which they adhere.

The spawning is done by more than one male and the males also push the females to the top of the water where oxygen levels are higher. This is where the spawning happens. In some cases, the spawning also happens in the gravel and rock by the watery surface where they reside.

In the smallmouth buffalo fish, similarly, there is less migration. The eggs are laid on the vegetation found in the watery bodies and spawning is similar to how it happens with the bigmouth buffalo.

The number of eggs laid can vary from a few hundred to hundreds of thousands of eggs. The creation of fish fry depends on the recruitment success of the sperms and the eggs.

Once the eggs are hatched the buffalo fish does not really do much by way of rearing the young. The young fishes are susceptible to predators. In their juvenile stage, the fry hides within the vegetation found in their areas.

What is their conservation status?

The buffalo fish species are abundantly found in nature and are not threatened in any way. There is hence no need for any conservation efforts to protect buffalo fish from extinction.

White buffalo is a type of fish that is sacred to the indigenous people near the Dodge river. These fish have been diminishing in population, unfortunately. Anglers and fishers need to have a lot of fishing skills in order to catch the white buffalo fish.
