The tailless feature is mainly due to a genetic mutation affecting the spine of the cat.

A kitten can be born completely without a tail, or it may have a long or short tail.

The coat of the Cymric is also important as it is often thought to be a long-haired breed. However, the Cymric often has coat variations, where it can have a medium to long-haired coat.

The double coat of this breed helps to keep it warm during cold days. Another one of the unique characteristics of the Cymric has to be the color of its silky hair coat.

It is often a surprise, and the color is often complementary to its eyes. White, blue, black, red, silver, cream, tortoiseshell, and brown are the most commonly seen hair colors for this breed.

Longies or fully-tailed Cymric cats can also be called long-haired Manx or Isle of Man cats. A breeder can never tail the type of kittens that will be born to the female Cymrics as the tailless appearance will depend on the gene of the parent cats.

The name Cymric comes from the Welsh name Cymru, meaning Wales, even though the cat breed isn't associated with Wales. It is said that the name might have been used to give the Cymric a Celtic-sounding name.
