Halfbeaks are a genus of fish that are found all around the world, but mostly around the Indo-Pacific regions where they can find brackish water. They are named due to the unusual length of the upper and lower jaws of their beak.

The lower jaw is much longer in the family of halfbeaks.

They are slender, small fishes that are widely commercialized all over the world. People purchase them both with the intention of eating and for keeping them as a pet, although the variety of halfbeaks preferred for the two instances would be different.

Halfbeaks are typically silvery gray or pale green in color, although, some aquarium-friendly species can also be found in an amazing golden color. They mainly depend on crustaceans and small fishes for food when in their natural habitat.

To speak in scientific terms, the class that halfbeaks belong to is known as Actinopterygii. However, we can just as easily say that they belong to the class of marine creatures.

Since they are so widely spread throughout the world, it is hard to determine the exact number of halfbeaks that there are in the world. However, their conservation status suggests that this fish faces no threat of extinction.

Where does a halfbeak live?

The halfbeak fish is said to prefer brackish water or freshwater environments. They dwell on the surface level of water and are ideally kept in slightly warm water that has the temperature range of 70-86 F (21-30 C).

The color of their body can range from pale green to yellow. The male halfbeak fish typically has colorful fins and a black lobe on its lower jaw. The female halfbeak fish can be less colorful fins, and a red lobe on its lower jaw.

How cute are they?

Considering that the halfbeak fish species is widely accepted as a pet all over the world, it is already well established that halfbeaks are very cute and would be the perfect addition to your aquarium or tank!

However, this fish does require quite a few plants in the tank or aquarium to completely hide the small size of its body.

Several species of the halfbeak (hyporhamphus) family such as Wrestling halfbeak are popularly kept as pets by people all around the world. Since they are such peaceful creatures and so small in size, they can easily be kept with other fishes such as congo tetras, black neon tetras and three spot gouramis.

They are also particularly easy to take care of since they can be fed all sorts of frozen foods that are meant for carnivorous fishes.

Few things to keep in mind when deciding to have them in your aquarium or tank are that the water temperature is maintained, there are a few plants for the fishes to feel comfortable, feeding is done on time and that the pH level is maintained at around 8.

They require warm water of about 70-86 F (21-30 C), and the pH of the water should range from 6.5 to 8. They also require certain plants and rocks or miniature caves to be present in the tank in order to feel comfortable and at home.
