Adults males approach females at the bottom of the water, and these coral trout display darkened edges of their fins as a courtship ritual. Males mate with multiple females and spawn multiple times. Females lay up to 450,000 eggs at one time.

Females reach sexual maturity by four years. Groupers have the ability for sexual transition. Juveniles are protected by their parents in the initial few weeks to keep them safe from possible predators.
